With it being Summer time, my skin is getting dried out by the constant sun exposure. I have been searching for a way to keep my skin moisturized while soaking up all of the vitamin D! My son also has a problem licking and biting his lips. This tallow cream works so great for use on his face and body to actually heal his skin.

My boys just recently had birthdays so we have all kinds of new, fun outdoor activities to indulge in. Squirt gun battles and the trampoline have been something we do daily and I love it! Between play time outside and garden duties, we spend a good majority of the day out in the sun.

This cream has been a serious life saver for our skin. We love how customizable and safe this recipe is for everyone.

What is Tallow?

Tallow is fat that has been rendered from grass-fed cows. There are nutrients present in a grass-fed diet that aren’t present in a cow that was fed grain, corn, and other foods. Tallow is a stable fat containing a thing called, antimicrobial palmitoleic acid. It fights agains a bacteria type called gram positive bacterias. Our skin is our largest organ, so, whatever goes on our skin goes into our bodies. Tallow will nourish your body and prevent bad bacteria from entering in.

How to get Tallow

The easiest way I have gotten tallow is to render it myself. There is a local farm that I trust, who’s cows are grass-fed and finished. I can buy the beef fat for just a couple of dollars per pound. Then, all I have to do is grind it up with my handy dandy meat grinder attachment on the Kitchen Aid, and cook it down in the Instant Pot. This is the same process I use to render Lard from pasture-raised pigs.

Though there are other methods of rendering tallow, using an Instant Pot is definitely the quickest! You can also find grass-fed tallow on Amazon, but I recommend supporting a local farmer you trust.

My favorite Essential Oils to use in this recipe

  • Frankincense
  • Lavender
  • Wild Orange
  • Adaptive
  • Copaiba
  • Jasmine
  • Neroli
  • Rose

Essential Oils like Frankincense and Lavender are very moisturizing oils. Floral oils, like Jasmine, also are very moisturizing and have wonderful benefits for your skin. I love using citrus oils as well for their uplifting properties and uplifting smell. You can also blend these oils to create your favorite aroma and cater to your skin needs. Check out my favorite ones to use during pregnancy for a nourishing belly balm to keep my skin from itching as it stretches!

Possible uses for this DIY Tallow cream

  • Eczema
  • Rashes
  • Dry skin
  • Acne-prone skin

Due to the nutrition properties found in Tallow, it is extremely nourishing for all skin types. I use it on my face and body daily to hydrate my skin. I have very dry, flaky skin and this cream has helped actually heal my skin.

My son also gets eczema and has rashes on his lips often from licking and biting them. I have found that he gets temporary relief when I use Coconut Oil and/or Jojoba oil with Essential Oils. However, I have seen his skin stay clear longer since I have begun using this cream on him daily! I can’t say enough about using tallow on the skin combined with CPTG Essential Oils.

Yield: 1 jar

Equipment

  • Bowl medium to large
  • Hand mixer Stand mixer with whisk attachment would also work
  • Spatula

Materials

  • ½ Cup Tallow from grass-fed cows
  • ¼ Cup Organic Avocado Oil Coconut or Olive Oil would also work great
  • 25-30 drops Essential Oil CPTG

Instructions

  • To the bowl, add tallow and carrier oil. Beat well until blended fully.
  • Add Essential Oil of choice and mix well.
  • Store in a glass container with a lid and use within a year.

Notes

If you would like the cream to have a thicker consistency, try adding some raw beeswax to the mix before blending. To do so, grate the beeswax or use pellets and add to small glass bowl. Create a double boiler by adding some water to a pot and placing the bowl on top, until the wax is melted. Blend the liquid beeswax into the mix and place the finished product in the fridge for about 15 minutes to firm up a bit.
