What is prayer?
Prayer is simply talking to God. It’s easy to try to complicate prayer, but the truth is that God did not intend for us to complicate it. Praying for a particular thing or lifting God up to a praise, are both ways we can commune with God.
There isn’t a “right” way to pray. Although, we should always pray “in Jesus name.” This is because we are acknowledging that Jesus is our way to God, alone. It is because the Jesus that we can pray and communicate to God. We are given many, great examples all throughout the Bible of how to pray. God knows our words even before we say them because He is all-knowing and knows our hearts and thoughts.
I learned how to pray for my kids by watching the wonderful example of my Spiritual Mother. Of course, I also learned how to pray from the Bible. I have felt very encouraged on how to pray since observing what a healthy prayer life looks like over your children through my Spiritual mother. If you do not have a woman in your life that can encourage you in this, I pray God would bring one to you to bless you with wisdom.
How powerful are prayers?
The power of prayer is something I have become passionate about. This is because I have personally witnessed God’s goodness and faithfulness to answer my prayers. There were times I thought God wasn’t going to come through, that there was no way He could, yet He did! A wonderful example of this is when lived on a low budget for some time. We never knew if our bills would get paid each month because of inconsistent, low income. I can tell you that God came through every time. He is faithful to listen to our prayers.
Our cherished children are the biggest earthly blessing that we could have. How much more important is it to pray over them? Especially for their salvation. Satan would want nothing more than for us to miss the importance of prayer. Don’t give him that foot hold over you and your family.
Philippians 4:6 tells us to bring our requests before God. Another great example is found is James 5:3. James tells us not only to pray for our hurt but also praise God in our blessings, acknowledging that He is the source of every blessing! Prayer is life changing and there is nothing you can lose by doing so.
How to be consistent in prayer over your toddler
In order to be sure you are consistent in prayer over your children would be to start out with some sort of schedule. I know it sounds odd scheduling prayer, but I find it helpful in the beginning when you aren’t sure where to start.
How about this, every time you lose patience with your toddler, cry out to God for them. To praise God for your little blessings, be sure to do so as soon as the thought of them being so awesome crosses your mind every day. Try to lift your children up to God every time you have a thought about them, positive or negative, and you surely will be consistently in prayer.
The simplicity of saying prayers
Prayer is simple, yet we complicate it. Just confess to God the desires of your heart for your children and praise Him for the wonderful little people they are. Once you get in the habit of regularly praying for your children, you will no longer need the schedule to remind you to do so.
Isn’t it so crazy that we can get so busy with our day and forget such a thing as prayer? I know I feel “off” when I get through the majority of the day and realize I haven’t prayed for my children. Our children are watching us and we must show them how easy it is to talk to God, to pray.
Favorite prayers and praises to say over my toddler
Here is a list of some of the daily prayers that I like to say over my sons. They are never exactly the same, but they are always along these lines.
- Praise for my boys’ kind heart
- Praise for their health
- Praise for their fun, unique personalities
- Prayer to heal their “boo-boos”
- Prayer for their Salvation
- Prayer for God to help them fight sin, specifically disobedience
- Prayer for their understanding of Spiritual lessons
- Prayer for God to protect their hearts and minds from the enemy
It is our duty, as parents, to be praying over our children. In doing so, we are teaching them how to pray. They are always watching and listening to our words. It is my prayer that my kids would remember me for how I pray and live for God every day.
